FreeBSD 5.4 was released yesterday. They’re testing out distribution via BitTorrent so I fired up my client to share in the distribution of four of the ISO image files: disc 1 and 2 of both the i386 and amd64 releases. At the peak, I was pulling down about 2.1 megabytes/second across all four files. After about 12 hours, I had pushed out over 41 gigabytes to others. Having a large burstable connection is convenient at times…

Here’s a chart of the bandwidth used. Normally there is a spike around 6am from our normal traffic which is somehow missing today. I started the torrent at about 11pm last night, which is shown by the blue line of incoming traffic. The big green blob to the right shows the data being pushed out.

Since the upload data rate has dropped significantly, and there are lots of other torrent seeds, I’ve since turned mine off. Here’s a screenshot of the torrent a few minutes after I started it:
